Job Title: Museum Outreach Assistant

Department: Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology

Reports to: Director of Visitor Engagement and Education

Status: Non-Exempt/Hourly, Staff, Part-Time, Non-Benefited

SUMMARY

The Outreach Assistant is charged with providing guest services and assisting in the implementation of the public outreach and education programs at the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology. This involves working with museum guests and museum staff to educate the public on the museum, collections, and resources available.

RELATIONSHIPS

The Outreach Assistant reports to the Director of Visitor Engagement and Education and must work closely with Alf Museum/The Webb Schools staff and faculty.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Check-in guests at the admission kiosk and provide guest services.
  • Open and close museum exhibit halls without supervision.
  • Positively represent the Alf Museum and The Webb Schools to guests and the broader community.
  • Lead both in-person and virtual tours.
  • Assist in the implementation of outreach and education programs.
  • Work with the Tours Manager in tour implementation.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and some holidays.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Background and experience with guest services, such as cashier experience or check-out kiosk experience, are required. Knowledge of, or experience with, paleontology, natural history, museum science, and science communication (or public speaking), is preferred. Associate or bachelor’s degree in science, education, or related academic discipline preferred.

OTHER SKILLS

Given the responsibilities, specific duties, and authority vested in this position, the Museum Outreach Assistant must have:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, a professional demeanor, and excellent interpersonal skills that are required in working with diverse constituencies.
  • Strong analytical skills to make informed decisions and use good judgment.
  • An ability to take on tasks and duties with minimal or no direct supervision.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

A valid California driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record is required. A criminal background check is required and must be successfully completed before employment can begin. Schedule availability during Wednesday through Saturday.

COMPENSATION PHILOSOPHY

Anticipated salary: $18.00/Hour

The Webb Schools offer competitive compensation. In setting position ranges, Webb reviews numerous factors including industry data from NAIS, CAIS and NBOA and other market data.
